For some time, many of us have been eating genetically modified food. The humble soy bean being pretty common and used in lots of processed food.
Wired News has posted an [interesting story](http://www.wired.com/news/wireservice/0,70504-0.html) about genetically modified pigs whose DNA is mixed with that of a small worm.
> Geneticists have mixed DNA from the roundworm C. elegans and pigs to produce swine with significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids — the kind believed to stave off heart disease.
> Researchers hope they can improve the technique in pork and do the same in chickens and cows. In the process, they also want to better understand human disease.
Omega-3 eh?
Interesting, because [there is some doubt now](http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200603/s1600639.htm) about the benefits of Omega-3.
Apparently, a study published in the British Medical Journal has found no strong evidence that omega-3 fats have any clear health benefits.
It’s funny how so much lifestyle advice these days all say the same thing – eat healthy and exercise. No matter what chemicals, new compounds, extracts, genetic modifications – if people just eat sensibly and exercise, they don’t get ill… go figure.
Nice post Jonno.
Armed with a few years science we are trying to improve a genetic system that has evolved over millions of years just so people don’t have to exercise. Ah me, the silliness of it all 🙂
