If there’s anything certain in life, it’s that you can always find a Buddhist temple in Thailand.

“Wat Phra Yai is a Buddhist temple known primarily for its golden 18-metre tall ‘Big Buddha statue’. The temple dates back to the 1940s when Pattaya was still a fishing town, while the statue was built in 1977. The steps leading up to the statue are bounded by two 7-headed Nagas who are designed to guard the statue. Wat Phra Yai also contains seven other statues of the Buddha in different postures to represent their day of the week.”

Climbing the steps to the Big Buddha, it’s easy to forget you’re close to a major tourist city. Except for the crowds, though everyone showed a quiet, respectful reverence.

Reaching the top of the stairs, the shining golden Buddha seems to smile as it overlooks those who come to pay respects.

There are many smaller statues surrounding the Big Buddha. From different aspects of Buddha, to gods and faithful monks in golden robes. As you walk behind the Big Buddha, towards the back of the hill, you’re presented with a panoramic view of Pattaya. The tall, modern buildings juxtaposed against the ancient history firmly grounded on the hill.

It’s worth visiting and only a relatively short drive from Central Pattaya.
