A 16-year-old kid has invented a way to generate electricity by spinning [magenetic bacteria](http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/DLCME/curious/caOc96SC.html) around to generate a field – in the same way windmills use a magnetic generator.
> Kartik Madiraju, an 11th-grader from Montreal, was able to generate about half the voltage of a normal AA battery with a fifth of an ounce of naturally occurring magnetic bacteria. And the bacteria kept pumping current for 48 hours nonstop.
As he says, “no-one has ever used bacteria to produce an electrical current before”.
